Writing fluently is about far more than holding a pencil correctly. For many children, especially those who struggle with coordination or learning differences, the real challenge lies in motor planning.
Understanding how the brain plans, sequences, and executes movement is a key focus ofoccupational therapy for handwriting, helping children write with greater ease, speed, and confidence both at school and at home.
What is Motor Planning?
Motor planning, often called praxis, is the brain’s ability to:
- Plan a movement
- Organise the steps involved
- Carry out the action smoothly
When motor planning is well developed, writing feels automatic. When it’s not, children may know what they want to write but struggle to form letters, maintain spacing.
